Upper Primary TET syllabus
not confirmedWest Bengal Teacher Eligibility Test · Classes VI–VIII
Upper Primary track, classes VI to VIII. The structure — 150 questions in 90 minutes, two languages chosen from eight, and a choice of Mathematics and Science or Social Studies — is taken from the Commission's own question booklet for the 2016 Upper Primary TET (paper code CSSCT-2015). The list of topics is not: no official Upper Primary syllabus has been published, so the syllabus here follows past papers and remains provisional.
This track follows an earlier West Bengal TET framework. It has not been confirmed against a current official notification, so treat its structure and syllabus as provisional.

Our notes on this subject
Child Development and Pedagogy is thirty of the hundred and fifty questions on the Upper Primary paper, and it is written for a teacher of classes VI to VIII — adolescents, not young children. That shift matters more than it sounds. The theory is the same theory, but the examples move: identity rather than attachment, peer influence rather than parental, abstract reasoning rather than concrete.
The syllabus runs from development and learning, through the named theorists, to learner-centred education, inclusive education, curriculum and assessment. It is a single long list rather than a set of separate units, so the risk is reading it as a glossary and learning the words without the arguments behind them.
What the paper wants is the application. A question typically describes something a teacher sees — a pupil who performs well alone and badly in a group, a class where only the confident answer — and asks which principle explains it or what the teacher should do. Learning Piaget's stages is straightforward; recognising that a fourteen-year-old reasoning about a hypothetical is formal-operational thinking is the part that scores.
This track is provisional. No official Upper Primary syllabus has been published, so the structure here follows the Commission's own past papers and should be treated as a guide rather than a final list.

Language I30 questions · 5 topics · 19 headings · 19 with a lesson
Our notes on this subject
Language I on the Upper Primary paper is thirty questions in the language you offer as your medium. The Commission offers a choice of eight; this site prepares Bengali and Hindi.
The syllabus is organised by what is being tested rather than split into reading and pedagogy as the Primary paper is: language learning and acquisition, teaching approaches and classroom practice, assessment, the elements of the language itself, and content specific to the language offered. In practice you will still meet unseen passages, and they are still the most reliable marks in the section, because they cannot be revised for and they reward nothing but careful reading.
The language-elements part is where the Upper Primary paper is noticeably harder than the Primary one. Grammar at this level is examined as something a teacher must be able to explain rather than merely use — why a construction is what it is, not only whether it is correct — and that is a different kind of knowledge from speaking the language well.
This track is provisional: no official Upper Primary syllabus has been published, and the structure here follows past papers.

Language II30 questions · 5 topics · 20 headings · 20 with a lesson
Our notes on this subject
Language II is thirty questions in the second language, English on this site. The Upper Primary syllabus sets it out in five parts — comprehension, the four skills, language development, language items, and assessment — which is a more analytical breakdown than the Primary paper uses, and a useful one: it tells you exactly which of the five a given question belongs to.
Comprehension is unseen prose and behaves as it does everywhere: the answer is in the passage, and the distractors are the readings that sound reasonable in general. Language items — grammar, vocabulary, usage, sentence structure — is the part that can be revised, and the part where marks are most reliably gained or lost on preparation alone.
The three remaining parts are about teaching. They ask how a second language develops, how each of the four skills is built and why they are not interchangeable, and how a teacher finds out what a learner can actually do. The recurring judgement the paper asks for is whether a classroom choice gives the learner more use of the language or less.

Mathematics & Science60 questions · 14 topics · 96 headings · 96 with a lesson
Our notes on this subject
Mathematics and Science is sixty of the hundred and fifty questions — twice any other subject — and you sit it *or* Social Studies, not both. That choice is the single biggest decision on this paper, and it should be made on which subject you can teach rather than which you remember liking at school.
The mathematics half runs from number and algebra through commercial arithmetic, geometry, mensuration and data handling, and ends with the pedagogy of the subject. The science half covers the nature of science, physics, chemistry, life science, natural phenomena and natural resources, and its own pedagogy. Between them this is the largest content list on the site.
Sixty questions in a paper of ninety minutes means roughly thirty-five seconds a question across the whole paper. That is the real constraint here, and it changes what preparation means: a method you can execute quickly beats a method you can derive. The pedagogy questions are the fastest marks in the section if you have read for them and the slowest if you have not, because there is nothing to work out — you either recognise the principle or you argue with yourself.

Social Studies / Social Science60 questions · 7 topics · 68 headings · 68 with a lesson
Our notes on this subject
Social Studies and Social Science is sixty of the hundred and fifty questions, and it is the alternative to Mathematics and Science — you take one of the two. Choose on what you can teach, not on what looks lighter; sixty marks is too much of the paper to spend on a subject you are guessing at.
The content is history from the earliest societies to independence, geography, social and political life, and civics, followed by the pedagogy of the subject. History is the largest part and the one most often prepared as dates. It is not examined as dates. The questions are more often about why something changed, what a source can and cannot tell you, and how a period is argued about.
The pedagogy half is where this subject differs most from the others. Social science is taught through sources — a map, a photograph, an inscription, a census return — and a great many questions turn on the difference between a primary and a secondary source and on what each is good for. Where an option has children reasoning from evidence rather than being told a conclusion, it is usually the one being looked for.
