Mathematics is thirty of the hundred and fifty questions, and the section has two distinct halves: the mathematics itself, and how it is taught. Candidates confident with the arithmetic routinely drop marks in the second, and candidates weak at arithmetic often find the second is where they can recover. Prepare both.
The content is primary mathematics — number and the four operations, geometry and shape, measurement, and pattern. It is set at the level of classes I to V, which misleads people. The questions are not hard, but they are precise, and they are written so that a careless reading lands on one of the wrong options. Work them; do not recognise them.
The pedagogy covers what mathematics is as a subject, why it is taught, how children build the ideas, what their errors mean and how the subject is assessed. The thread running through it is that a wrong answer in mathematics is usually a consistent method applied to a misunderstanding — a child who always takes the smaller digit from the larger is not being careless, they are following a rule they have invented — so the option that reads an error as information about the child, rather than as something to be corrected and moved past, is generally the one being looked for.
